Vivekananda Rock: The Spot of Vivekananda’s Enlightenment

The Vivekananda Rock stands tall and majestic at the southernmost top of India’s mainland. It was built in the 1970 under the guidance and design of RSS Swayamsevaks, Kachi Kamakoti Peetham and Ramkrishna Mission. Apart from the design and initiative of these institutions, the construction of the memorial at Vivekananda Rock also got the financial support of the government at the Central and the State level.

The beauty of the location is accentuated by the fact that the Vivekananda Rock is situated at the confluence of the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. This quality of the location emphasized the importance of the location for Swami Vivekananda who attained Enlightenment, at this spot.

 

MYTHOLOGY

A Spiritual Location

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial has become synonymous to spirituality due to the reason behind its importance and prominence. According to the records, Swami Vivekananda swam across the column of sea between Kanyakumari to the rock and stayed there for three days.

These three days of focused meditation, cut off from the mainland led to Swami Vivekananda attaining Enlightenment. This story emphasizes the pious and spiritual aura of the rock. Due to the journey and culmination of Swami Vivekananda’s search for Enlightenment, the rock has attained prominence and a stature of a highly spiritual place for anyone seeking some solace through spirituality and connecting with the divine.

 

SIGNIFICANCE

A Spiritual History

According to a famous folklore and mythology, the location of Vivekananda Rock was the spot where Goddess Parvati performed devoted meditation for Lord Shiva. This story adds more weight and importance to the spirituality and sanctity of the Vivekananda Rock.

The mythology and story of Swami Vivekananda makes this rock a place a perfect and conducive environment for gaining more insight into spirituality and the divine.

 

ARCHITECTURE

A Unique Architecture

The design was conceptualised by Eknath Ranade. According to his ideology, this location and monument was of national importance. He started the work, crossed several political hurdles with the help of several organizations  and designed a memorial which was exceptional in design as well as scientific foundation.

To add more beauty and divinity to the place, the architecture is designed in basically two sections. The first one is called the Vivekananda Mandapam. The second one is called the Shripada Mandapam.

 

The Vivekananda Mandapam

This section of the memorial is constructed to remember and celebrate the wisdom of Swami Vivekananda. It stands as an inspiration for the youth to strive for attaining true knowledge. This section also includes a special hall where the visitors can meditate. It is called the Dhyana Mandapam.

 

The Shripada Mandapam

This section of the memorial includes several important sections of the holy place. Garbha Graham, Inner Prakaram, Outer Prakaram and Outer Platform form this section of the Vivekananda Memorial.
