Rahu

Rahu is one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial bodies) in Hindu astrology, and it is associated with the North Node of the Moon. In Vedic astrology, Rahu is considered a shadow planet, and its influence is believed to have significant effects on an individual’s life during its Mahadasha (major period) or Antardasha (sub-period).

Both Rahu and Ketu are not actual physical planets made up of mass, they are the points of intersection between the orbit of the Sun and Moon, making them lunar nodes. As they cause an eclipse, they are also known as shadow plants but are strong energy points. Rahu is known to be a lazy planet associated with obsession, fears, dissatisfactions, fame and turmoil.

Here are key points about Rahu:

  1. Representation: Rahu is often depicted as a serpent, similar to Ketu (the South Node of the Moon), with a dragon’s head and no body. In Hindu mythology, Rahu is said to have a voracious appetite and is associated with deception and illusion.
  2. Ketu and Rahu Axis: Rahu and Ketu form an axis in Vedic astrology, and their transits are carefully studied. The position of Rahu in an individual’s birth chart is considered along with its counterpart Ketu to understand karmic influences.
  3. Material Desires and Attachments: Rahu is associated with material desires, ambition, and worldly attachments. Its influence is often linked to intense desires, cravings, and a drive for material success.
  4. Rahu Mahadasha: The Rahu Mahadasha is a significant period in an individual’s life, lasting for 18 years. It is believed to bring about both challenges and opportunities, with influences on various aspects such as career, relationships, and spiritual growth.
  5. Kala Sarpa Dosha: The Kala Sarpa Dosha is a condition in astrology where all planets are situated between Rahu and Ketu in a person’s birth chart. This alignment is believed to have specific influences on an individual’s life.
  6. Rahu Worship and Remedies:
    • Rahu Mantra: Chanting the Rahu mantra, “Om Raam Rahve Namaha,” is considered beneficial.
    • Rahu Yantra: Some individuals may use a Rahu Yantra for worship and meditation to balance the energies associated with Rahu.
  7. Gemstone (Hessonite or Gomed): The gemstone associated with Rahu is the Hessonite Garnet, also known as Gomed. Wearing this gemstone is believed to help counteract the malefic effects of Rahu.
  8. Charitable Acts: Donating items associated with Rahu, such as radishes, brown mustard oil, and sesame seeds, is considered auspicious. Performing acts of charity is believed to mitigate the negative influences of Rahu.
  9. Worship of Lord Shiv: Rahu is associated with Lord Shiv, and some devotees may choose to worship Lord Shiva to seek blessings and protection from Rahu’s influences.

It’s essential to note that the effects of Rahu are interpreted based on its placement in an individual’s birth chart and its relationship with other planets. Seeking guidance from a knowledgeable astrologer for personalized advice and remedies is recommended. Additionally, approaching these practices with sincerity, faith, and a positive mindset is considered important in Hindu spirituality.
