Navagrahas : The Nine Planets

Navagrahas, also known as the Nine Planets, are a group of celestial entities in Hindu astrology and mythology. These planets are believed to influence human life and are associated with specific deities.

The Navagrahas include the seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) and two shadow planets (Rahu and Ketu). Each of these grahas (planets) is associated with a specific deity and has its own significance in astrology.

The seven names of the week are derived from the nine planets. Rahu and Ketu are not planets but the shadow nodes of the moon. 9 graha pooja’s  are conducted. They are worshipped, and these planets are worshipped individually as well.

In Hindu astrology, Dasha refers to a planetary period during which a particular planet has a major influence on an individual’s life. The planetary periods are determined based on the positions of the planets in an individual’s birth chart or horoscope.

Here is a brief overview of the Navagrahas and their associations:

  1. Surya (Sun): Surya is associated with the Sun and is considered the giver of life and energy. The Sun is associated with health, vitality, and overall well-being. Sun or Surya is a royal planet and the king in astrology.
  2. Chandra (Moon): Chandra represents the Moon and is associated with emotions, mind, and fertility. The Moon is linked to mental well-being and influences emotions. Moon or Chandra is also a royal planet and is the queen in astrology.
  3. Mangal (Mars): Mangala is associated with Mars and is considered a fiery planet. Mars is associated with energy, courage, and confidence.
  4. Budha (Mercury): Budha represents Mercury and is associated with intellect, communication, and learning. Mercury is linked to education and wisdom.
  5. Guru (Jupiter): Guru is associated with Jupiter and is considered a benefic planet. Jupiter is associated with wisdom, knowledge, and good fortune.
  6. Shukra (Venus): Shukra represents Venus and is associated with love, beauty, and pleasure. Venus is linked to relationships and artistic pursuits.
  7. Shani (Saturn): Shani is associated with Saturn and is considered a malefic planet. Saturn is associated with discipline, hard work, and karmic lessons.
  8. Rahu: Rahu is a shadow planet associated with the head of the demon. In astrology, Rahu is linked to ambition, desire, and sudden events.
  9. Ketu: Ketu is another shadow planet associated with the tail of the demon. Ketu is linked to spirituality, detachment, and past life experiences.

In Hindu astrology, the positions of these grahas at the time of an individual’s birth are believed to influence their personality, life events, and destiny. Devotees may worship the Navagrahas to seek their blessings and mitigate the malefic effects of planetary positions through various rituals and prayers.
