Shani – Saturn

Shani Dev, also known as Lord Shani or simply Shani, is a significant deity in Hinduism associated with the planet Saturn. It is considered a malefic planet. Due to its far placement in the solar system, it takes a long for Saturn to complete a revolution, making it a slow planet. It denotes ambition, discipline,  hard work and perseverance.

In Hindu astrology, Saturn is one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial bodies) that are believed to influence human life. Saturn is associated with discipline, hard work, and karmic lessons. Capricorn and Aquarius signs are ruled by this Graha.

Here are key points about Shani :

  1. Representation: Shani is often depicted as a dark-colored, stern-looking deity with a crown and a sword. In some representations, he rides a chariot pulled by crows or ravens.
  2. Son of Surya: Shani is considered the son of Surya (the Sun god) and Chhaya (meaning shadow). Chhaya is a shadow form of Surya’s wife Saranyu.
  3. Role in Astrology: In Hindu astrology, Shani is considered a powerful and influential planet. Its position at the time of an individual’s birth is believed to influence one’s life, particularly in areas such as discipline, hard work, delays, obstacles, and karmic lessons.
  4. Sade Sati: Shani is often associated with the phenomenon known as “Sade Sati,” a seven-and-a-half-year period during which Saturn transits through the zodiac sign preceding, the same as, and following the Moon sign of an individual’s birth chart. It is believed to bring challenges and opportunities for growth.
  5. Devotee of Lord Shiv: Shani is considered a devoted follower of Lord Shiv. There are myths that highlight Shani’s devotion to Shiv and the significance of appeasing Shani for mitigating the impact of its influence.
  6. Temples and Worship: Devotees of Shani worship him to seek blessings, protection, and relief from the malefic effects associated with Saturn. Temples dedicated to Shani are found across India, with the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra being particularly well-known.
  7. Gemstone (Blue Sapphire (Neelam)): The gemstone associated with Shani is the Blue Sapphire, also known as Neelam in Hindi. Wearing a Neelam Stone provides protection from dacoity, accidents, theft and problems caused due to the natural disaster like fire, flood, storms etc. It also helps in protection from evil eye, enemies, jealousy & hexing etc.
  8. Saturday (Shanivar): Saturday is dedicated to Lord Shani, and it is believed that worshiping Shani on this day can help alleviate the challenges associated with Saturn’s influence.
  9. Maha Dashas and Antardasas: In Vedic astrology, there are planetary periods known as Maha Dashas and Antardasas. The period of Saturn’s influence (Shani Mahadasha) is considered a significant phase in an individual’s life.

Devotees of Shani often engage in prayers, rituals, and charitable activities to appease Shani and seek its benevolence. The worship of Shani is believed to bring discipline, endurance, and spiritual growth.
