Why did Vaishnodevi killed Bhairav Nath?

Bhairav Nath, also known as Bhairon or Bhairav Baba, is a deity in Hinduism, He is often considered an incarnation or form of Lord Shiva and is associated with the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

. The story of Vaishno Devi and Bhairav Nath is rooted in Hindu mythology and the pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine.

The story goes as follows:

  1. The Pursuit of Vaishno Devi: Bhairav Nath, originally a devotee of Goddess Vaishno Devi, developed feelings of lust and desire for the goddess. He became infatuated with her and began pursuing her.
  2. Vaishno Devi’s Evasion: In order to avoid Bhairav Nath’s advances, Vaishno Devi fled into the Trikuta Mountains. Bhairav Nath chased her relentlessly, and the chase continued for quite some time.
  3. Vaishno Devi’s Penance: To escape from Bhairav Nath, Vaishno Devi entered a cave and continued her meditation and penance for several months. It is believed that during this time, she transformed herself into a powerful, multi-armed goddess.
  4. Battle with Bhairav Nath: When Bhairav Nath eventually found Vaishno Devi in the cave, he demanded her hand in marriage. Vaishno Devi revealed her true divine form and refused his proposal, explaining that she had dedicated her life to meditation and penance.
  5. Bhairav’s Challenge: Bhairav Nath was not convinced and challenged Vaishno Devi’s divinity. A battle ensued between them, which lasted for nine days.
  6. Vaishno Devi’s Victory: Eventually, Vaishno Devi’s divine form overcame Bhairav Nath, and he was defeated. Before dying, Bhairav Nath realized his mistake and asked for forgiveness.
  7. Vaishno Devi’s Mercy: Vaishno Devi forgave Bhairav Nath before his death. It is said that she granted him a boon that the pilgrimage of her devotees to the shrine would only be considered complete when they visited the temple of Bhairav Nath, which is located nearby.

As a result of this story, the pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine is not considered complete until devotees visit the temple of Bhairav Nath, symbolizing the reconciliation between Vaishno Devi and Bhairav Nath after their conflict. The story highlights themes of devotion, forgiveness, and the triumph of the divine over worldly desires.
