Story
The story of Vamana’s birth and mission is told in the Hindu scriptures known as the Puranas. According to these texts, the demon king Mahabali had become powerful and arrogant after conquering the entire world and was threatening to overthrow the gods.
In order to restore balance to the universe, Vishnu took on the form of Vamana, a small, dwarf-like being, and approached Mahabali with a request for a small piece of land. Mahabali, believing that Vamana was just a poor Brahmin, agreed to the request and asked Vamana to measure out the land with his three steps.
Vamana, however, revealed his true identity as an avatar of Vishnu and used his divine powers to grow to an enormous size. With his first step, Vamana covered the entire earth, and with his second step, he covered the entire sky. With his third step, Vamana asked Mahabali to give him a place to rest his foot, and the demon king, realizing that Vamana was a divine being, offered his own head as a place for Vamana to rest.
Vamana, satisfied with Mahabali’s devotion, granted him a boon and allowed him to return to the underworld, where he would continue to rule as a just and wise king. With his mission accomplished, Vamana returned to the divine realm, having restored balance to the universe and defeating the demon king Mahabali.
