Sanskrit: The language of Every Era

This blog post elucidates the reader on the beauty of Sanskrit and its significance that transcends every age of our Hindu culture. It talks about how the language has become a great subject of research and debate, nationally and internationally.

 

Every feature and script of our Hindu culture that we cherish and read to add more wisdom to our life was written in Sanskrit. We now read the simpler versions in various languages but they were originally written in Sanskrit. From Rig Veda to all the Upanishads to Mahabharata, ever script and compilation of significance was originally written in Sanskrit.

 

ETYMOLOGY

The Origin and Meaning of Sanskrit

Sanskrit as a language is beautifully unique in origin. In the beginning it was only used for verbal communication by highly valued Sage Vedavyas. He used the method of verbal compilation for many writings which form the base of the Hindu Culture. The first form of Sanskrit that came into being was the Vedic Sanskrit. In the ancient India, Sanskrit was used for the verbal transmission of the first Veda, Rigveda.

Gradually a script for Sanskrit emerged. The word Sanskrit is a combination of Sam which means Together, Kr which means Make and Ta, which together forms Samskrta which means, Composed or Elaborate. This signifies the depth of the language and also indicates the science behind every word in the language. There are about 800 roots in the language. With time, different scripts of Sanskrit emerged with influence from different cultures and time periods like Brahmi Script, Nagari Script etc.

Sanskrit can be traced back to 1500 BCE which is basically the era of decline of Harappan Civilization and the beginning of Early Vedic Age when Rigveda was composed. This era marks the beginning of the composition of literature which gave birth to the culture of Hinduism.

The importance of Sanskrit grew rapidly from the Ancient India. The most important literary texts, epics, shlokas, Vedas, Upanishads and many more important scriptures of the Hindu Culture was written in Sanskrit. It captured the essence of the wisdom beautifully with its melodious musical connotations and logical formation of every word. The language is designed to suit every culture and era. Sanskrit travelled all over the world through different travelers of Ancient and Medieval time. Sanskrit played a crucial role in influencing many languages of the Dravidian culture.

The concept and influence of Sanskrit as transcended ages and geography. Many famous and global universities are conducting studies on Sanskrit and the science behind every root and words. The epics and texts written in Sanskrit have become a subject of research. The interest of the modern world in an ancient language comes from the vast versatility of Sanskrit. The language is being read and understood to analyse and understand many more ancient texts better. The composition of Sanskrit with its unique vowels consonants and pronunciation holds a very important place in understanding the importance of the culture and concepts that existed in the ancient India and during the Vedic Age. A better understanding of Sanskrit can help understand the evolution of the Indian subcontinent civilization and Hinduism better.

The importance of Sanskrit in our modern India is clearly depicted by the fact that, Sanskrit is included as one of the 22 Official Languages in the Indian Constitution. And it has also been declared as the Second Official Language of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

 

The Growing Ambit of Sanskrit

The researchers, historians, physicists and mathematicians are trying to read and understand Sanskrit better so as to unravel the wisdom of the ancient texts and maybe unlock some important facts about our world. It is important to stress on the significance of Sanskrit and how crucial it is to keep up the endeavor to understand it better so as to understand the Hindu Culture better without any corruption.
