Sacred Bull of Lord Shiv : Nandi

Nandi, which means “giving delight” or “giving joy,” is the sacred bull of the Hindu god Shiv, one of the most important Hindu gods. When the world becomes evil, Shiv destroys it to make way for beneficial change. Nandi is Shiv’s animal form, his means of transportation, and his most ardent worshiper.

Nandi is a prominent figure in Hindu mythology, particularly in the context of Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism that worships Lord Shiv as the Supreme Being. Nandi is a divine bull and is considered the primary attendant and gatekeeper of Lord Shiv. The relationship between Nandi and Shiv is symbolic and carries deep spiritual significance. Here are some aspects of their relationship:

  1. Devoted Attendant:
    • Nandi is often depicted as sitting at the entrance of Lord Shiv’s abode, either on Kailash, the sacred mountain associated with Shiv, or at the entrance of Shiv’s temples. As the gatekeeper, Nandi is considered extremely loyal and devoted to Shiv.
  2. Symbol of Devotion and Dharma:
    • Nandi’s unwavering devotion to Shiv serves as a symbol of absolute devotion and righteousness (dharma). In Hindu philosophy, devotion to the divine is considered a path to spiritual liberation, and Nandi exemplifies this through his dedicated service to Shiv.
  3. Vehicle of Shiv:
    • In Hindu iconography, gods and goddesses are often depicted with their vahanas (vehicles). Nandi serves as the vehicle or vahana of Lord Shiv. This association signifies a harmonious relationship between Shiv and Nandi, with Nandi carrying Shiv and symbolically representing the willingness to serve the divine.
  4. Role in Mythological Stories:
    • While Nandi is primarily known for his role as Shiva’s attendant, there are mythological stories that highlight Nandi’s devotion and interaction with Shiv. These stories emphasize Nandi’s loyalty, wisdom, and spiritual insight.
  5. Shiva’s Blessings:
    • Devotees often seek Nandi’s blessings before approaching Lord Shiv. It is believed that by pleasing Nandi, one can gain access to the divine presence of Shiv. In some traditions, people circumambulate the Nandi statue or image before entering Shiv temples as a form of reverence.
  6. Nandi as a Symbolic Representation:
    • Nandi is sometimes seen as a symbol of the Jivatma (individual soul) seeking union with the Paramatma (Supreme Soul, represented by Shiv). Nandi’s devotion and surrender to Shiv exemplify the aspirant’s journey toward spiritual realization and oneness with the divine.

In summary, the relationship between Nandi and Shiva symbolizes the qualities of devotion, loyalty, and selfless service in the path of spiritual growth. Nandi’s presence at the entrance of Shiv’s abode also signifies the importance of humility and surrender in approaching the divine.
