Nine Avaranas Or Nine Enclosures

In certain Hindu traditions, especially those associated with the worship of the goddess Lalita Tripurasundari (also known as Lalita Devi), the concept of “Nine Enclosures” or “Nine Avaranas” is significant. These enclosures represent layers or levels of the goddess’s divine presence, each guarded by specific deities, and they are part of the broader Sri Yantra, a sacred geometric diagram.

The Sri Yantra is a mystical diagram consisting of intersecting triangles and circles, symbolizing the divine feminine energy. The Nine Enclosures are concentric layers within the Sri Yantra, and they are associated with different aspects of Lalita Devi’s divine presence. Each layer is guarded by a specific set of deities, and they are traversed by the devotee through meditation and contemplation as part of spiritual practice.

The Nine Enclosures are as follows:

  1. Trailokya Mohana Chakra (The Enchanting of the Three Worlds): The outermost enclosure, representing the material world, is guarded by Bhupura and is associated with the gross elements.
  2. Sarva Aasa Paripuraka Chakra (The Fulfiller of All Desires): The second enclosure, representing the mental world, is guarded by the Shodasha Dala Padmam and is associated with the subtle elements.
  3. Sarva Sankshobahana Chakra (The Agitator of All): The third enclosure, representing the intellectual world, is guarded by the Shodasha Kona and is associated with the causal elements.
  4. Sarva Saubhagyadayaka Chakra (The Bestower of All Prosperity): The fourth enclosure is guarded by the Sarvartha Sadhaka Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripura.
  5. Sarva Rakshakara Chakra (The Protector of All): The fifth enclosure is guarded by the Sarva Rogahara Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripureshi.
  6. Sarva Rogahara Chakra (The Remover of All Diseases): The sixth enclosure is guarded by the Sarva Siddhiprada Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripura Sundari.
  7. Sarva Anandamaya Chakra (The Source of All Bliss): The seventh enclosure is guarded by the Sarva Rakshakara Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripura Vasini.
  8. Sarvananda Maya Chakra (The Source of All Happiness): The eighth enclosure is guarded by the Sarva Siddhiprada Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripura Malini.
  9. Trailokya Vilasa Chakra (The Playful Delighter of the Three Worlds): The ninth and innermost enclosure is guarded by the Sarva Anandamaya Chakra and is associated with the goddess Tripura Siddha.

Devotees meditate on each of these enclosures, contemplating the divine attributes associated with each layer, as they progress towards the innermost realms of spiritual realization and unity with the goddess.
