Kamdev : Hindu God of Love

Kamadev, often simply referred to as Kama, is a prominent deity in Hindu mythology who personifies desire, love, and sensual pleasure. He is often depicted as a youthful and handsome deity wielding a sugarcane bow and floral arrows, riding upon a parrot.

In Hindu mythology, Kamadev’s most famous role is as the god of love, similar to Cupid in Western mythology. He is responsible for kindling desire and attraction between beings, whether humans or gods. Kamadev’s arrows are said to have the power to ignite feelings of love and passion in the hearts of those they strike.

One of the most well-known legends featuring Kamadev is his attempt to arouse feelings of love in Lord Shiv. According to the myth, after the death of Shiv’s first wife, Sati, he withdrew into deep meditation and renunciation. Concerned that the universe would fall into imbalance without Shiv’s participation in creation, the gods enlisted Kamadev’s help to disrupt Shiv’s meditation and stir feelings of love within him.

Kamadev, accompanied by his wife Rati and his friend Vasanta (the personification of spring), approached Shiv while he was meditating. Using his flower-tipped arrows, Kamadev attempted to arouse feelings of love in Shiv’s heart. However, Shiv was infuriated by this interruption and opened his third eye, releasing a powerful flame that incinerated Kamadev.

Despite being burnt to ashes, Kamadev’s sacrifice was not in vain. His act of disrupting Shiv’s meditation ultimately led to the union of Shiv and Parvati, resulting in the birth of their son, Kartikey, who would later become a formidable warrior and vanquish demons.

In Hindu mythology, Phalguna Purnima is also associated with the legend of Kamadev’s revival.  His wife, Rati, pleaded with Lord Shiv to restore him, and eventually, on the auspicious day of Phalguna Purnima, Kamadev was revived, symbolizing the rejuvenation and renewal of love and life with the arrival of spring.

Kamadev is revered as a symbol of the power of love and desire, highlighting the importance of these emotions in human life and the natural world. He is often invoked by devotees seeking blessings for romantic relationships, marital harmony, and fertility. While Kamadev is not as widely worshipped as some other Hindu deities, his presence in mythology serves to remind believers of the significance of love and desire in the cosmic order.
