Gujarati Music

Gujarati music is rich and diverse, reflecting the cultural and regional variety of the state. It encompasses a wide range of genres, including traditional, folk, devotional, classical, and contemporary forms.

Gujarat, one of the iconic states of India, holds a peculiar ocean of history where art and literature played the most important role of protagonists. But, when it comes to Gujarati music, there is definitely a lot more than just Garbas.

Here are some major genres within Gujarati music:

1. Folk Music (Lok Geet)

  • Garba: A traditional dance form that is accompanied by rhythmic music, often performed during the festival of Navratri. Popular Garba songs include “Tara Vina Shyam” and “Sanedo.”
  • Dayro: A storytelling tradition where folk songs are sung, often accompanied by a narrative or moral lesson.
  • Bhavai: A form of folk drama that includes music, performed by a traveling troupe.
  • Raas: Another traditional dance form similar to Garba, often associated with Krishna worship, where participants use sticks (dandiya) in rhythm to the music.

2. Devotional Music (Bhajans)

Gujarati devotional music holds a special place, particularly bhajans and other spiritual songs dedicated to gods and goddesses.

  • Bhajans of Narsinh Mehta: Songs written by the 15th-century poet-saint Narsinh Mehta, who is revered in Gujarat. “Vaishnav Jan To” is one of the most famous bhajans.
  • Sant Kabir Bhajans: The teachings and bhajans of Kabir, a spiritual saint, are also popular.
  • Gujarati Jain Music: Songs dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras, offering peaceful, meditative tunes.

Bhajan is a devotional song type that includes subcategories like Prabhati, Katari, and Dhol.

3. Sugam Sangeet

This is a light classical music genre, blending elements of classical ragas with easy, melodic tunes. Singers like Purushottam Upadhyay and Kaumudi Munshi are famous for Sugam Sangeet.

4. Classical Music

Gujarat has a rich tradition in classical music, particularly in Hindustani classical forms. Many artists from Gujarat have contributed significantly to the Indian classical music scene.

5. Film and Modern Music

Gujarati cinema (Dhollywood) has produced numerous popular songs, especially in recent years with the resurgence of Gujarati films. Modern pop, rock, and fusion styles are also gaining popularity, with artists experimenting with blending traditional Gujarati elements with contemporary music styles.

The rich traditional culture of Gujarat has graciously given the most dynamic musical form, and that’s what Gujarati music deliberately talks about.
