Chandi Path Chapter – 03

Chapter 3 of the Chandi Path, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptashati, from the Markandeya Purana, details the mighty battle between the goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasur. This chapter is a pivotal part of the scripture, showcasing the divine power and ferocity of the goddess in her fight against the forces of evil.

Chapter 3 of the Chandi Path, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptashati, from the Markandeya Puran. Durga Saptashati is also known as the Devi Mahatmyam, Chandi Path and contains 700 verses, arranged into 13 chapters. The third chapter of Durga Saptashati is based on “the slaying of Mahishasur”.

The story begins with the gods, having been driven out of their celestial abodes by Mahishasur, seeking refuge and aid from the supreme trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv. In response to their plight, the trinity emanates their combined energies, creating the goddess Durga, a radiant and powerful deity embodying their collective might.

Durga, adorned with celestial ornaments and armed with divine weapons, rides into battle on a lion, facing Mahishasur and his demonic hordes. The clash between Durga and Mahishasur is fierce and intense, with the demon showcasing his shape-shifting abilities, transforming from a buffalo to a lion, then to an elephant, and through various other forms in an attempt to overpower the goddess.

Despite his formidable powers and relentless assaults, Mahishasur is no match for the goddess. Durga, with her supreme strength and strategic prowess, systematically dismantles his defenses and slays his generals. The battle culminates in a dramatic and powerful confrontation where Durga, in a final act of divine wrath, decapitates Mahishasur in his buffalo form, thus liberating the cosmos from his tyranny.

This chapter of the Chandi Path not only illustrates the theme of the triumph of good over evil but also emphasizes the supreme power and benevolence of the divine feminine. Durga’s victory symbolizes the restoration of cosmic order and the protection of the righteous, reinforcing the faith of the devotees in the goddess’s omnipotence and her role as the protector of the universe.
