Bhairav Nath

Bhairav Nath, also known as Bhairon or Bhairavnath, is a deity in Hinduism. He is often considered an incarnation or form of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in the Hindu pantheon.

Bhairav or Bhairavnath (alternatively Bhairon or Bhaironnath) was a disciple of Gorakhnath, whose guru was the Matsyendranath. He was considered to have control over all tantrik siddhis and had grown arrogant of his power. Bhairav Nath is associated with several temples and worship practices across India.

Here are some key characteristics and aspects of Bhairav Nath:

  1. Fierce Form of Lord Shiva: Bhairav Nath is typically depicted as a fierce and formidable form of Lord Shiva. He is often portrayed with a terrifying appearance, with a dark complexion, dishevelled hair, and a wrathful expression. He is also adorned with various ornaments and often depicted holding a trident or weapon.
  2. Guardian Deity: Bhairav Nath is considered a guardian and protector. He is believed to guard sacred places, temples, and pilgrimage sites. Devotees worship him to seek protection and removal of obstacles.
  3. Temporal Aspect: Bhairav Nath is sometimes associated with the lord of time and is considered the embodiment of time (Kala Bhairav). This aspect reflects the idea that time ultimately consumes all things and beings.
  4. Worship and Rituals: Devotees of Bhairav Nath conduct special rituals, pujas, and aartis (ceremonial offerings) to seek his blessings and protection. In some traditions, alcohol and other offerings are made to Bhairav as part of the worship.
  5. Temples: Temples dedicated to Bhairav Nath can be found in various parts of India. These temples are often visited by people seeking protection, justice, and solutions to their problems.
  6. Kalabhairava Jayanti: Kalabhairava Jayanti is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Bhairav and is celebrated with devotion by his followers. It usually falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Kartika.

Bhairav Nath’s worship is especially significant for those who believe in his protective and fierce aspects. He is considered both a benevolent protector and a deity who enforces divine justice. His devotees seek his blessings for various aspects of life, including the removal of obstacles and the attainment of spiritual growth and wisdom.
