Shakti or Devi

In Hinduism, Shakti, meaning “power” or “energy,” is a concept that represents the divine feminine, the dynamic and creative aspect of the Supreme Reality (Brahman). Shakti is often personified as the goddess Devi, and she is considered the cosmic energy that animates all living beings and the entire universe.

Shakti is the divine force, manifesting to destroy demonic forces and restore balance. Every God in Hinduism has his Shakti and without that energy they have no power. Lakshmi is the energy of Vishnu. Parvati is energy of Shiv. Shakti is also called Devi or mahadevi, assuming different roles as Sati, ParvatiDurga and Kali. Key aspects and manifestations of Shakti/Devi in Hinduism include:

  1. Devi as the Divine Mother: Devi is often depicted as the nurturing and protective mother figure. Many Hindu goddesses, such as Durga, Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, are considered manifestations of the one supreme Devi.
  2. Mahashakti: The concept of Mahashakti refers to the ultimate, primordial cosmic energy from which the entire universe emanates. This cosmic energy is the source of all creation, preservation, and destruction.
  3. Durga: Durga is a powerful and fierce form of Devi, often depicted riding a lion and slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasur. She is worshipped during the festival of Durga Puja.
  4. Kali: Kali is a formidable and often fearsome aspect of Devi, associated with destruction and the fierce power that annihilates evil forces. Kali is often depicted with a dark complexion, a garland of skulls, and a tongue sticking out.
  5. Lakshmi: Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. She is often worshipped for material and spiritual well-being.
  6. Saraswati: Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, and the arts. She is revered by students, scholars, and artists seeking her blessings for success in their endeavors.
  7. Parvati: Parvati is the gentle and nurturing aspect of Devi, representing love and devotion. She is the consort of Lord Shiv and is also known by various other names like Uma and Gauri.

Devotees of Devi often worship her in various forms and aspects based on their personal inclinations and the specific attributes they seek. The worship of Devi is prevalent in various forms across the Indian subcontinent, and festivals dedicated to different manifestations of Devi are celebrated with great fervor. The Shakta tradition within Hinduism specifically focuses on the worship of Shakti as the supreme goddess.
