Dakshinamurthy Stotra

Dakshinamurthy Stotra : Authored by Adiguru Shankaracharya, this is a stotra praising Lord Dakshinamurthy, a form of Lord Shiv facing in the south direction. This is the prayer describing the glory of atman, the self. This form of Shiv embodies the ultimate guru, imparting wisdom and knowledge in silence.

The Dakshinamurthy Stotra is a revered Sanskrit hymn composed by the great sage Adi Shankaracharya. It extols Lord Dakshinamurthy, an aspect of Lord Shiv depicted as the supreme teacher. The stotra is a significant text in the Advait Vedanta tradition, highlighting the importance of the guru in attaining self-realization and enlightenment.

The stotra consists of eight shlokas (verses) that describe the nature of Lord Dakshinamurthy, who is the embodiment of knowledge and enlightenment. Each verse elucidates different aspects of the divine teacher:

  1. Verse 1: Glorifies the teacher who imparts wisdom silently, removing ignorance.
  2. Verse 2: Describes the state of the mind purified by the knowledge imparted by the guru.
  3. Verse 3: Praises the guru who reveals the truth beyond duality.
  4. Verse 4: Emphasizes the importance of realizing the eternal truth to overcome the limitations of time.
  5. Verse 5: Acknowledges the guru’s role in guiding one through the complexities of life and scriptures.
  6. Verse 6: Highlights the guru’s ability to understand and teach the higher truths beyond sensory perceptions.
  7. Verse 7: Appeals to the guru for liberation from ignorance and delusion.
  8. Verse 8: Concludes by honoring the guru as the universal self and ultimate guide.

The Dakshinamurthy Stotra is often recited by students and spiritual seekers to seek blessings for wisdom and enlightenment from the divine teacher, Dakshinamurthy.
