Chandi Path Chapter – 06

The Chandi Path, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptashati, is a Hindu religious text from the Markandeya Puran. Durga Saptashati 6th Chapter explains Dhumralochana Vadh – Killing of Demon Dhumralochana.

The Chandi Path, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptashati, is a Hindu religious text from the Markandeya Puran.  In the 6th chapter of the Durga Saptashati, titled “Dhumralochana Vadh,” the narrative centers around the fierce battle between the demon Dhumralochana and the goddess Durga. Dhumralochana, a powerful demon and a general of the demon king Mahishasur, confronts Durga with arrogance and aggression. He is described as having smoky-gray eyes (hence the name Dhumralochana, meaning “smoky-eyed”).

Despite his formidable appearance and magical abilities, Dhumralochana is no match for Durga’s divine prowess. Durga, embodying the collective strength of various gods, engages in a relentless combat with the demon. She manifests her supreme power through celestial weapons and divine manifestations, overwhelming Dhumralochana at every turn.

In the course of their battle, Durga swiftly overcomes Dhumralochana’s defenses and defeats him decisively. The demon is slain, marking a significant victory for Durga in her mission to eliminate the forces of evil led by Mahishasura. This chapter underscores Durga’s role as the protector of cosmic order and righteousness, showcasing her unparalleled strength and valor in the face of adversity.

The defeat of Dhumralochana is celebrated by the gods and celestial beings, who praise Durga for her courage and divine might. It highlights the eternal theme of the triumph of good over evil, reinforcing Durga’s status as the supreme goddess and defender of dharma (righteousness) in Hindu.
