Bhagvad Gita Chapter-14

Bhagavad Gita’s Chapter 14 is divided into 27 verses, and it is known as Gunatray Vibhag Yog or the Yog of The Division Of Three Gunas. Here, the conversation between Krishna and Arjun takes a deep turn into the analysis of Purush and Prakriti.

Krushna talks about three Gunas means tendencies of human beings: sattva, rajas, and tamas. These Gunas keep the self bounded to the body. And they all serve different divisions of dispositions. For example, Sattva holds knowledge and joy, rajas has passion and activity, and tamas is for laziness and sleep.

Sattva has the power to bring enlightenment and take a person closer to Krushna, Where other twos can weigh a person down. Moreover, the ruling Guna of a person right before his death decides his rebirth.

Therefore, Krushna says that the one who has gone beyond these Gunas accomplishes extreme serenity and nonattachment that eventually leads him to god.

Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita, titled “Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga” or “The Yoga of the Division of the Three Gunas,” delves into the intricate dynamics of the three fundamental qualities (gunas) that constitute all of nature (Prakriti): Sattva (goodness, harmony), Rajas (passion, activity), and Tamas (ignorance, inertia). In this chapter, Lord Krushna provides Arjun with a profound understanding of these qualities, their influences on human behavior, and the path to transcend them.

Lord Krushna begins by explaining that all beings are born into delusion by the influence of the three gunas inherent in Prakriti. Sattva, being pure and illuminating, binds one through attachment to happiness and knowledge. Rajas, characterized by passion and activity, binds one through attachment to action and its fruits, leading to restlessness and desires. Tamas, marked by darkness and ignorance, binds through negligence, laziness, and sleep, causing delusion and inertia.

Krushna illustrates how these gunas affect individuals and their actions. Sattva leads to purity and wisdom, Rajas fosters greed and restlessness, and Tamas results in ignorance and lethargy. The predominance of a particular guna at the time of death determines the soul’s next birth: Sattva leads to higher realms, Rajas to a human birth driven by attachment and desires, and Tamas to lower realms of ignorance.

Krushna emphasizes that by understanding the gunas, a person can transcend their influence and achieve liberation. He explains that those who rise above the gunas are not affected by their fluctuations and are established in the self, free from dualities like pleasure and pain, and view all beings with equality.

The path to transcending the gunas involves unwavering devotion to Krushna, who is beyond the gunas. By surrendering to him and engaging in pure devotion, one can surpass the influence of the gunas and attain the state of Brahman, the eternal, imperishable reality.

Krushna concludes by describing the characteristics of a person who has transcended the gunas: they remain impartial and undisturbed by the interplay of the gunas, maintaining equanimity in success and failure, and dedicating themselves to selfless service. Such a person achieves the ultimate goal of liberation and unification with the divine essence.

In essence, Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita provides a deep analysis of the qualities that govern human nature and behavior, offering a path to transcend these limitations through devotion, self-awareness, and alignment with the supreme consciousness.
