Rishi Durvasa: The Sage who blessed Krishna

This blog post details the life and work of one of the most powerful and unique sages of the Hindu culture, Rishi Durvasa. This post details the importance of his boons and curses in almost every epic of our Hindu culture.

BACKGROUND

Born by a Boon

There once was a Rishi Atri, he was one of the three Brahmarishis. His wife, Devi Ansuya was known as the Goddess of virtuousness and femininity. Devi Ansuya and Rishi Atri always wanted a child. She wanted the child to have the qualities of all the three Devas or Tridev, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. After years of penance, God Shiva gave a boon of a son who will be born as a Rudra form of himself. With this boon, Durvasa was born. Since it was a boon from Shiva, Durvasa had an innate fiery nature and a short temper.

LIFE

The Unique Life of Rishi Durvasa

From a very young age, Durvasa was known for his anger and was known to bless with a boon if pleased with someone. Once, Durvasa became immensely impressed with Kunti, the wife of King Pandu and awarded her with a boon with which she could bear a child with any deity she wished. So, Kunti was blessed with five sons with the blessings from five dieties, Lord Dharmaraj, Lord Indra, Lord Vayu and Ashwinikumars. This is how the five Pandavas were born. This shows that his boon led to a new chapter in the epic of Mahabharat.

WORKS

The Legacy of Rishi Durvasa

The nature of Durvasa is mentioned in many Hindu texts and has influenced many significant in the mythology of Hindu culture. One of the most important events occurred because of Durvasa’s boon to Krishna. Rishi Durvasa blessed Krishna with invulnerability in all the parts except his feet. This led to Krishna never getting hurt in the battle of Mahabharat. Krishna was shot fatally only once when a hunter mistook his feet as a deer since his feet were the only part of his body that did not get the boon of invulnerability, Krishna died of the shot.

This shows how a boon by the Rishi Durvasa made Krishna immortal throughout the decisive battle in Mahabharat which changed the course of events and favored the Pandavas.

CONTRIBUTION IN SOCIETY

Present in every Epic

The contribution and role of Rishi Durvasa can be witnessed in different parts of the different epics of Hindu Mythology. Apart from Mahabharat, Rishi Durvasa plays a role in the epic of Ramayan as well. His threat of a curse on the whole Ayodhya led Lakshman to interrupt Ram’s meeting with the Lord Yama. This led Lakshman to leave Ram for good so that he does not have to execute Lakshman as per the order of Lord Yama, who set the condition that anyone who interrupts will be executed by Rama.

The threat of Rishi Durvasa’s curse here led to a significant turn of events in Ramayan which also shows the devotion of both Ram and Lakshman to the ideal of Dharm.
