Achyutam Keshavam

The “Achyutam Keshavam” prayer is a popular Hindu devotional song dedicated to Lord Krushna, who is revered as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The prayer is composed of a series of epithets praising various forms and qualities of Lord Krushna, using different names that highlight his divine attributes.

Introduction to the Prayer:

  • Achyutam: Refers to the one who is infallible and unchanging, a name for Lord Vishnu.
  • Keshavam: Another name for Krushna, meaning the one with beautiful, flowing hair.
  • Krushna: The central figure of the Bhagavad Gita and the protagonist of the Mahabharat, known for his charm and wisdom.
  • Dāmodaram: Refers to Krushna’s childhood pastimes when his mother tied him with a rope around his waist.
  • Rāma Nārāyaṇam: Combines the names of Lord Ram and Narayan, emphasizing Krushna’s connection with other avatars of Vishnu.
  • Jānaki Vallabham: Refers to Lord Ram, who is the beloved of Sita (Jānaki).
  • Kānā Kāntam: Describes Krushna as the beloved of the Gopis (cowherd girls).
  • Rādheśyam: Signifies Krushna as the divine lover of Radha.

The prayer is often sung with devotion and reverence, reflecting the bhakti (devotional) tradition. It is known for its simple yet profound verses that capture the essence of Krushna’s divinity and his playful, loving nature. The repetition of Krushna’s various names in the prayer serves as a form of meditation and devotion for the devotees.
