Camp Hanuman: A Powerful and Pious Place

LOCATION

Situated in the Army Cantonment Area

The historical temple of Camp Hanuman is beautifully located in the cantonment area of the city Ahmedabad. The location of the temple gives it the unique name, Camp Hanuman. According to reliable sources, it was built a century ago and played an important subject as a chapter in our history of conflict with the colonial rulers. Its history and events around the temple have given it the reverence and significance that it commands, today.

 

MYTHOLOGY

A Powerful Temple

According to popular stories around the history of this temple, the colonial rulers tried to move the temple to a different location for their strategic motives but all their attempts failed due to several reasons like the intervention of the devotees and due to certain events that can’t be explained. One of the most popular and surprising incidents that has been recorded happened when the British government tried to remove the temple but were incapable of doing so due to an inexplicable obstacle that they failed to overpower.

It is said that once, the British administration tried to remove the temple from the Cantonment area but every time they tried to damage the structure, swarms of wasps protected the structure of the temple and did not let anyone start the project. Different methods were tried to damage the structure of the temple, but the several swarms of wasps would not let them touch the temple.

After a week, the administration gave up and changed their plans after realizing that they couldn’t move the temple.

 

SIGNIFICANCE

A Surprising Shield

Aside from the divine protection the temple seems to have, one of the most surprising incidents that happened in 1953 has added more reverence to this pious temple. Once, after the aarti ceremony, the idol of Lord Hanuman changed its color on its own and shone bright with a shining new shield. This incident added more awe for the devotees.

 

ARCHITECTURE

A Truly Indian and Ancient Architecture

The architecture of this temple is truly Indian. The temple was constructed in the traditional Dravidian style. The idol of Lord Hanuman is situated in the core or the interior of the temple. The exterior of the temple is carved with unique motifs and style. The idol of Lord Hanuman is beautifully decorated with a plating of Gold.

The temple has survived more than a century and changing demographics of India but still attracts throngs of devotees and tourists. In fact, the power of this temple and Lord Hanuman is experienced and proven by different generations and highly powerful personalities over the decades.

From British administrations to many powerful leaders of the Indian government, Camp Hanuman temple has gained the highest esteem, devotion and respect from every generation. Famous and respected personalities like Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have visited the temple.
